Recently I received an email from Frank Gelman, the Executive VP of Marketing Communications and Product Acquisitions of Battery Place Market in Lower Manhattan at 77 Battery Place. It is located in Battery Park City, a quiet and residential neighborhood. He wanted me to meet with him and Executive Chef Robert Sckalor and give me a tour. I was quite excited to do this.
Battery Place Market is spotlessly clean. That is very important when you are working with food. Everything was neatly arranged on the shelves and looked quite appetizing and inviting. Even most of the building materials including the floor are made from recycled material. It really is an environmentally friendly place.
As we walked around, Mr. Gelman showed me a terrific variety of products. There is an extensive selection of jellies and jams, artisan breads, coffees and teas, fresh pastas, etc. All of it including many organic products are very easy to find because Battery Place Market is arranged by product groups such as breads, jams and jellies, produce, meats, dairy etc. Everything is fresh and artfully displayed.
Wherever possible, Battery Place Market buys products locally especially when the fruits and vegetables are in season. As you experience the sights and aromas of Battery Place Market, one word comes to mind. That word is “eat.” Whether you are cost conscious and trying to feed your family or looking for something high end and delicious for lunch, the Battery Place Market is for you!
I was then introduced to Executive Chef Robert Sckalor. Chef Robert has 37 years experience in the culinary industry having worked in places as The Waldorf Astoria, Agata & Valentina, and The Four Seasons. Chef was a pleasure to speak with and I could tell how proud he is of his culinary masterpieces as everything looked absolutely delicious! Everything is made fresh and from scratch daily. Some of the items are Macaroni and Cheese, BBQ Ribs, Fried Chicken Fingers, Sliced Kobe London Broil, and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. These are just some of the daily entrees that they offer. There are also rotating entrees and side dishes which can be anything from their Chicken Pot Pie to their Monkfish Provencal or their Chicken Tikka Masala just to name a few. How about Curried Cauliflower, Organic Corn Salad made with locally grown tomatoes, or their Marco Polo Salad.
In addition to hot foods, they also carry a wide variety of sandwiches and pre made salads. Why not grab a Turkey Sandwich with Arugula and Mayo, or a Tijuana Roast Beef Sandwich for lunch. A few of their freshly packaged salads are their Mardi Gras salad which consists of grilled Shrimp, red leaf lettuce, Kumato/heirloom tomatoes, pickled onion, endive, and carrots. La Mancha Salad made with Imported Spanish Goat cheese, blanched Asparagus, pitted Manzinella olives, spring mix, pink peppercorns, marinated roasted red peppers, extra virgin olive oil or their Campania Salad made with Burrata cheese, red & yellow Grape Tomatoes, marinated mushrooms, chick peas, imported marinated artichokes, spring mix, endives, chives and olive oil.
If you are looking for fresh meats, there is a plethora of variety. How about Boneless Loin of Pork, Chicken Cutlets, Dry Aged Boneless Rib Eye Steaks or even Ground Kobe beef?
No local market would be complete without a selection of fresh gourmet cheeses. Battery Place Market carries a wide variety of wonderful cheeses; Spinach & Roquefort, Pecorino, Brie and Smoky Blue, just to name a few. If you are looking for fresh olives, look no further as they have these too, imported from Italy and Spain and will tickle your palate. Are you into fresh pasta? You have come to the right place. They have their own pasta bar with 3 different types of pasta; regular, whole wheat and gluten-free with delicious sauces and toppings to go with it.
Do you have a sweet tooth? Let Battery Place Market satisfy it with their wonderful variety of homemade cakes, tarts and pies. I had the pleasure of tasting something called a Blueberry Puffin, no I didn’t make a typo, you are reading that correctly, they call it a Puffin because the blueberries are so plump and puffy and delicious. This delicious treat melted in my mouth! In addition to their baking delights, there is a whole refrigerated case with containers of fresh cut fruits for those looking for a low calorie option.
In addition to all this, you can find your typical grocery type items, canned goods, frozen foods, oils and vinegars. Since Battery Place Marketcaters to families they have a large assortment of organic baby foods.
In my opinion, every neighborhood should have a market like this!
